The UBS Handbook lists three possible antecedents of "first": The hard-working farmer has the right to be the first to receive a share of the crops. (NASB, NIV, LUT, SCHL) A farmer has to work hard first before he can have a share of the crops. (ELB [CSV]) The first share of the crops (a designated portion) should be given to the farmer who works hard. (ESV, NET) The UBS favorites the first option.
Referring to verses 1-6 or even the whole letter.
