Explanation of the Parable of the Soils

The disciples approach Jesus and ask Him about the parables. Jesus responds, telling them that they have been given the mystery of the kingdom but those on the outside receive only parables. He then explains to them the meaning of the parable of the soils. The seed is the word. The word is heard in all four cases. However in the case of the seed by the road, Satan steals it away. The seed in the shallow soil stands for people with no root, who are swept away during persecution. The seed among the thorns are those who are troubled by the cares of this world. Finally, the seed in the good soil stands for those who hear and accept the word and bear fruit.

It appears that Jesus is saying that if the disciples do not understand this parable, they cannot understand other parables. The NLT translates this: "If you can’t understand the meaning of this parable, how will you understand all the other parables?"
