Psalm type: Individual Thanksgiving
Synonymous Parallelism: the following lines repeat or reinforce the sense of the first line.
Some see this as a rhetorical question answered with "There is no way to repay the Lord." I see this as a question with the answer provided in v13-14. The Psalmist sees glorying in God's freely received salvation in the company of believers as a way to "repay" Him.
Or "costly" (German: teuer), thus God delivers His godly ones from death.
Here the means by which the psalmist pays his vows is to glory in God's freely received salvation and worship.
Here the means by which the psalmist pays his vows is to offer thanksgiving and worship.
Because the Lord cares for his godly ones, He delivered the psalmist, since he is God's servant, coming from a godly family. The psalmist, as a result, will offer thanksgiving and worship.
Although the psalmist was greatly afflicted and alarmed (agitated - the opposite of rest), seeing no human hope, yet he speaks to his soul to return to its rest for God has delivered him.
