notes
Main point summary
Paul now gives the Colossians two commands. The first is to walk in Christ as they first received Him. The second is to watch out so that they are not misled by worldly philosophies, which are not centered on Christ. The reason for this is the fact that Christ is God in the flesh, the highest authority and the one who has completed and saved us. This saving work of Christ is then described in detail.

ground
The participles are all passive. I assume that God is the one who rooted, and is not building up and establishing. The result of this is or should be thanksgiving.
NASB and NIV translate this as a temporal statement: "When you were dead...". NET translates this as a concessive statement: "And even though you were dead... He nevertheless...". ESV is ambiguous: "And you who were dead...". I have chosen temporal based on Eph 2:11.
Through the cross 1) Christ made us alive together with Him (v13b) and 2) Christ made a public display of His enemies (v15b).
Circumcision and baptism mentioned in v11-12 are the saving work of Christ. This saving work is further explained in v13-15.
V8-9 describe a fight for our mindset. Will it be that of Christ or that of the world. V10-15 provide the reason why it has to be Christ's.

The Cross: Life for Believers
When you were dead in your transgressions and the uncircumcision of your flesh,
He made you alive together with Him,
having forgiven us all our transgressions,
having canceled out the certificate of debt consisting of decrees against us, which was hostile to us;
and He has taken it out of the way,
having nailed it to the cross.
The Cross: Defeat for His Enemies
When He had disarmed the rulers and authorities,
He made a public display of them,
having triumphed over them through Him.
