God has visited us, accomplished redemption and raised up a horn of salvation.
He has done this to show mercy to the fathers and remember His covenant.
"Mercy to the “fathers” seems to mean that God has not thwarted their hopes." EBC
The covenant was sworn to Abraham so that we may serve God all our days.
God is to be bless because He has brought salvation to his people, keeping His covenant He made with Abraham.
John's ministry is to prepare the way of the Lord, so that the people may know the way of salvation which is the forgiveness of sin.
Forgiveness of sin is possible because of God's mercy.
John will be called a prophet of God because he will go before Him and prepare the way.
