Isaiah 53:4-6 ESV
4 m Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, n smitten by God, and afflicted. 5 o But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, p and with his wounds we are healed. 6 q All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned—every one—to his own way; r and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.
m Surely he has borne our griefs
Indeed he has taken away our sickness
and carried our sorrows;
and carried our hurts;
yet we esteemed him stricken,
yet we considered Jesus stricken,
n smitten by God,
judged by God,
o But he was pierced for our transgressions;
But rather, he was pierced for OUR transgressions,
he was crushed for our iniquities;
and he was crushed for our iniquities,
upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace,
God put on Jesus the punishment we deserved, which brings us peace with God
p and with his wounds we are healed.
and the wounds Jesus suffered can therefore heal our own.
q All we like sheep have gone astray;
Every single one of us do not choose God
we have turned—every one—to his own way;
in that we live as if we're King of our lives
r and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.
and as a result God has given Jesus the burden of all our sins.
Surely= indicates strong assertive force, emphasizes a contrast
borne=to carry, to take away
esteemed=to be thought of, to be considered
Jesus took on our sickness, and carried our pain, yet we concluded he himself was being judged by God.
BUT, he was being punished for OUR sins, which gave us peace with God and healing.
Us going astray has resulted in God laying our sin on Jesus.
