Commentary: Verses 29 and 30 and carbon copies of each other in almost every regard. Both have if-then statements in parts a & b and are followed by a grounding statement in part c. In verse 29 Matthew highlights the visual aspect of sexual sin and talks about gouging out your eye while in verse 30 he highlights the physical aspect of sexual sin and talks about cutting of your hand. Jesus is not advocating castration here because Jesus is clear elsewhere that sin is a heart issue not a sight and touch issue. What he is advocating though is an all out war against your sin that is so serious it is willing to go to extreme measures to win the battle.
