Central Idea: This verse is one of many in the New Testament that state why Jesus came. Jesus came to serve that is to give his life as a ransom for many. Jesus' coming was not random or by accident. He came with a purpose and that purpose was to give his life. He came to suffer and die. He did not come to be served. This is not primarily an example of sacrificial giving or love that we are to follow. Certainly, we are to love sacrificially and give, even our life for the sake of the gospel. But only Jesus could pay this ransom--not us. Only Jesus could satisfy debt and set us free from the wrath of God against our sin. Jesus came to serve--to serve us and the manner in which he does this is by giving his life.
