Seminar: Asking the other why question
Seminar: Asking the other why question
When reading the Bible, we are accustomed to ask “Why is that so?” Examples from Genesis 1-2. Why did God create by speaking? Why did God create light, day and night before he created the Sun? Why did God create day-by-day throughout a week's time? Why did God rest of Saturday? These are good questions, and we could add to them a hundred more. But there is another sort of why question which we ask far less—a question which would also serve us in our study of the scriptures. That question is, “Why was this verse included?” It is a question that can lead to a lot of insight and open up for us a flood of other why questions we had not previously thought of. A wonderful place to try this out is in Genesis 3:20-24. [ Summarize context + read text. ] VERSE 20 Why was this verse included? Why is the progression of the post-Fall events interrupted with the naming of Eve? Why did Adam choose this time to name his wife a second time (see 2:23)? Why does he name her “life-giver”? [ Answer these questions as a group. ] VERSE 21 Why was this verse included? Why is it important for us to know about the clothing God made for them? Why did God even make them clothing? Why did he make them out of animal skin? [ Answer these questions as a group. ] VERSES 22-24 Why were these verses included? Certainly to understand the story, we need to be told Adam and Eve were kicked out of Eden, but why all this detail? And why does God not just destroy the tree of life? [ Answer these questions as a group. ]
