Main point [Jesus:] Love one another like I have loved you by setting my course to die for you as my friends after doing everything to make you my friends. Questions Q: Here things appears backwards from what I previously understood. Is answered prayer the purpose of fruitfulness, or is fruitfulness the result of answered prayer? A: Rather, I think now think that answered prayer (for fruitfulness) is the result of Jesus' appointing us for fruitfulness. It is part of the incredible sovereign workings of God. Q: How does this passage jive with the verses in Rom 5:7-8 "For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die— but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us." ? A: This is another way of describing ultimate love here because of the bit about the disciples not choosing Jesus, but he choosing them. Jesus dies for his friends, not because they are inherently faithful and good to him, but because he makes them his friends via sovereign choosing and appointing. Insights/notes In vs 14 Jesus puts out the condition, but then seems to go around the condition. There is a sweet dynamic of God's sovereignty and our responsibility here. He chose us to be fruitful which is evidence of abiding, and said these things that we might love one another which is evidence that we love him, which is the condition of being loved by him. It is like human responsibility and God's sovereignty go round about in a seemingly endless circle, but ultimately we find it is not a circle but rather a spiral--with God (not us) as ultimate initiator (vs 16). Vs 17 probably connects to more above (beyond the start of this arc/bracket), since Jesus talks of these commands but we only find one command in this passage. Above is "abide in my love"
