Central Idea Those united to Christ by faith need no longer fear condemnation, because their sin has been paid for and they have been given new life in the Spirit. There is logic in this passage that is very difficult to understand, I think. It has taken me much wrestling and re-working to arrive to where I am at (which I am excited about, because I feel like I understand it a lot more!). Here is my paraphrase in attempts to further bring out what I am understanding Paul's logic to be: There is no condemnation for those united to Christ by faith, because of God's glorious "Spirit of life" freedom plan in Jesus. Let me unpack it. God did the impossibility of his own righteous law by executing his full wrath on sin in his Son on the cross so that we would be perfectly cleansed and given the ability to actually live out the righteous law of love through the new life in the Spirit that we have been subsequently given. This is true because (1) people set their minds on things that accord with their nature (and hence you were flesh-minded people of condemnation before Jesus, and you now are Spirit-minded people of righteousness in Jesus since you have been forgiven and transformed/indwelt by the Spirit) and (2) the outcome of where you set your mind is either death [i.e. condemnation] (for those with minds set on the flesh) or life and peace [i.e. freedom from condemnation] (for those with minds set on the Spirit)--because flesh-set minds make people enemies of God. What is meant by "law of the Spirit of life"? "law" in this sense seems to convey the idea of principle , or the way things are in reality. The "Spirit" I think is correctly capitalized, referring to the Holy Spirit. He is called the Spirit "of life" here because I think Paul is emphasizing him as the giver of condemnation-free, righteousness-enabled life "through Christ Jesus".
