Meditation
The most dangerous attacks on the gospel are most often the most subtle. These attacks do not come from without by blatant antagonists to God's Word. These attacks emerge from within—from those accepted to be counted among the righteous. We must know the gospel well to recognize and fend off such attacks—not just the simplistic explanations of the gospel, but the Good News in its depths. One litmus test for a gospel teaching is expressed well in Psalm 37:39. "The salvation of the righteous is from the Lord." Here, grammar counts. Note the object of the word "is"—namely the entire phrase "from the Lord." There are certainly many things that the salvation of the righteous is , but perhaps chief among them is this—biblical salvation is from the Lord. Let's try it out. "God helps those who help themselves." No, salvation is from the Lord. "The world is desperately in need of grace, and it starts with you." No salvation is from the Lord. "You cannot believe in God until you believe in yourself." No, salvation is from the Lord.
