The main idea of the Passage is "Paul Opposing Peter". Here Paul descrbes the actions of Peter in Antioch a predominantly non-jewish city in that day. Paul and Barnabas had Antioch as one of their prominent places of ministry as we seen in Acts 11 :19-26. We see that Peter's act of hypocricy led to : 1. Paul opposing him 2. Other Jews following him icluding barnabas Paul grounds his argument stating that Peter was clearly in the wrong as he was not acting according to the truth of the Gospel. This passage is the basis of his further discussion of law and faith.

For prior to the coming of certain men from James,
For before certain men came from James,
he used to eat with the Gentiles;

he drew back and separated himself,
fearing the party of the circumcision.

The rest of the Jews joined him in hypocrisy,
And the rest of the Jews acted hypocritically along with him,
with the result that even Barnabas was carried away by their hypocrisy.

But when I saw that they were not straightforward about the truth of the gospel,
But when I saw that their conduct was not in step with the truth of the gospel,
I said to Cephas in the presence of all,
I said to Cephas before them all,
"If you, being a Jew, live like the Gentiles and not like the Jews,
"If you, though a Jew, live like a Gentile and not like a Jew,
how is it that you compel the Gentiles
how can you force the Gentiles
to live like Jews?
to live like Jews?"
