I arc'ed this after reading a chapter in John Piper's Finally Alive, so that impacted my thinking about it. In retrospect, I would've liked to see if I could come to similar conclusions as he does if I study the text on my own first. In any case, here is what I think the text is saying: "Regeneration means believing in Jesus. The new birth allows us to love other believers. The way we love other believers is by cheerfully keeping God's comandments. However, we can't love other believers until we've overcome the world. We overcome the world through faith in Jesus. So the new birth produces faith, and world-overcoming faith produces love" Or, as Piper puts it: Regeneration, faith, love. In that order.

Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God,
and everyone who loves the Father loves whoever has been born of him.
By this we know that we love the children of God,
when we love God and obey his commandments.
For this is the love of God,
that we keep his commandments.
And his commandments are not burdensome.

For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world.
And this is the victory that has overcome the world-- our faith.
Who is it that overcomes the world
except the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?
