The main thought is 'love one another'. But there seems to be three reasons or grounds given to do this. 1. Source (New Birth) - if we have come from God, and God is love, then we will love. 2. Basis (the gospel) - we should love one another b/c look how God has loved us. 3. Exhortation/Opportunity (witness) - if we love one another, we demonstrate the character of the unseen God to the world that does not love Him. So, John gives three motivating reasons to love one another: First, it is what born-again people do or people who come from God do (this is sort of a reality check to see if you are born-again and a call to act in congruency with your Father). Second, we have been treated with so great a love, how can we not love? Third, we have the opportunity to witness to the character of the unseen God by loving one another.

Beloved, let us love one another,
for love is from God,
and [if someone] loves
[then he] has been born of God
and [then he] knows God.
series
[If] Anyone does not love
[then he] does not know God,
conditional
because God is love.
negativepositive
ground
In this the love of God was made manifest among us,
that God sent his only Son into the world,
so that we might live through him.
actionpurpose
In this is love,
not that we have loved God
but that he loved us and
sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.
progression
ideaexplanation
Beloved, if God so loved us,
[then] we also ought to love one another.
No one has ever seen God;
if we love one another,
[then] God abides in us and
[then] his love is perfected in us.
