We're in Galatians 1, the first chapter of Paul's no-holds-barred attempt to turn the Galatian churches away from a false gospel. I've phrased the first five verses, and as you can see, my phrasing has uncovered the two main phrases of these verses (if we combine "grace ... and peace" into one idea). This makes an outline of the text - an outline faithful to Paul's thought. Let's look at these two main points, and see what Paul had to say under them; we can discover what was driving Paul as his pen scratched along parchment, and from that we can hopefully have our priorities and our affections reordered, like what Paul wanted to happen to the Galatians. OK, first , in verses 1-2, Paul identifies himself . This is a normal beginning for a letter of his. What is not normal, however, is the detail he goes into about the source of his apostleship. The first three subordinate phrases under "Paul, an apostle" are significant! (We won't spend time on the last two, as they are simply identifying who else is with Paul when he wrote, and the destination of the letter.) The fact that Paul qualifies his status as an apostle in such detail should make us sit up and take notice - as the Galatians should have done when they first read it! Paul makes two main assertions about his apostleship: It was neither from nor through human beings, but through Jesus Christ and God the Father. He will expand on this assertion in 1:12-24. Secondly , in verses 3-5, Paul greets his readers . This is normal as well in his letters, as is his wish of "grace ... and peace" for them, which occurs in all his letters. But this is the only letter where Paul follows "grace ... and peace" with a comma instead of a period , and then a relative phrase which unpacks something specific that Jesus did. What did Jesus do? One thing that Paul draws our attention to: He "gave himself." Later, in 2:22, he will explain that he lives " by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me" (Gal 2:20). But here Paul says a lot more about Jesus' self-giving! He pours out a cataract of subordinate phrases about it. And even though they are not the main phrase of verses 3-5, all these subordinate phrases are part of Paul's main point , because they represent a huge amount of detail about the source of "grace ... and peace." Now, what does Paul want his readers to know about "the Lord Jesus Christ" and his self-giving? He wants us to know Jesus' purpose in giving himself, which he describes in two subordinate phrases. First, Jesus gave himself "for our sins." This is a Ground relationship; Christ offered himself up as a sacrifice to God because of our sins. And as Jonathan Edwards said, "You contribute nothing to your salvation except the sin that made it necessary." Jesus gave himself - there is nothing left to give! Secondly, Jesus gave himself "to deliver us." This is a Purpose phrase: Jesus gave himself because of our sins so that he could rescue us! Rescue us from what? There are two subordinate phrases under this, describing Jesus' delivering of his people through giving himself for their sins. First, Jesus delivered us "from the present evil age." This phrase has a relationship of Separation with its anchor phrase; Jesus' goal in giving himself was to rescue us from this age, which, as Tom Schreiner explains in his Zondervan Exegetical Commentary on Galatians, is ruled over by Satan, who is "the god of this age" (2 Cor 4:4), and is therefore evil. But Jesus inaugurated the age to come when he gave himself and rose again, as Schreiner explains, for the new creation has broken into the old one! And this was "according to the will of our God and Father," verse 4 concludes; that first subordinate phrase is related to its anchor phrase with a Standard relationship. That tells us that Jesus' inauguration of the kingdom of God was in accordance with the will of God - our God, the next genitive phrase says, and our Father. That's amazing, isn't it? God desired to free us, and so he sent his only Son and became our God as well as his - our Father, as well as his, as he told his disciples in John 20:17. No wonder Paul concludes with a doxology in verse 5! May our God and Father - which together are the antecedent of the relative pronoun "whom" - be praised throughout the rest of eternity! Jesus gave himself because of our sins and rescued us from the dominion of Satan, because this was the will of his Father and our Father. How else can we respond but with praise, with thanks, with joy? Now, let's connect the two main points, Paul's identification of himself as a God-chosen apostle, and Paul's greeting of grace and peace for his Christian readers. Here's how we can do that: The gospel Paul proclaims in verses 4-5 - Jesus' giving of himself because of our sins to rescue us from Satan to the glory of God - is Jesus' gospel, true and perfect. No human being made this up; this was God's plan! So you can rest your soul on it! Jesus died to deliver you, and He will surely continue his work! He died to accomplish the Father's will, which will surely be done. His death could never be in vain! The Holy Spirit will apply the redemption that the Son accomplished and the Father planned! As Thomas Watson wrote in The Godly Man's Picture , "The saints may be turned out of their houses - but they cannot be turned out of Christ's throne! Men may as well pluck a star out of the sky - as a saint out of the throne!" John Wesley powerfully told the story of Jesus' coming to rescue us and the security we have in him in the hymn "And Can It Be." " No condemnation now I dread; / Jesus, and all in Him is mine ! / Alive in Him, my living Head, / And clothed in righteousness divine, / Bold I approach th'eternal throne , / And claim the crown, through Christ my own ." Is this subordinate to "gave himself" or "to deliver us"? The Lexham SGNT says the latter. It doesn't seem to make a difference exegetically.
This makes the most sense to be referring back to "our God and Father," since it is the most recent antecedent, rather than to "the Lord Jesus Christ" (v. 4).
