The Superiority Of Love 1 Corinthians 13:1-7 This chapter divides itself naturally into 3 parts: 13:1-3, 13:4-7, and 13:8-13 1. The Superiority Of Love: 13:1-3 2. The Qualities Of Love: 13:4-7 3. The Permanence Of Love: 13:8-13 13:1-3 speak of the Superiority of Love over Spiritual Gifts. This paragraph answers the question, "What Value Do Spiritual Gifts Possess Without Love?" 13:4-7 speak of the Qualities of Love. This paragraph answers the question, "If Love is This Valuable, What is it?" or "What are the Qualities of Love?" The Superiority Of Love: 13:1-3 divide themself naturally into 3 parts, each having an "If - Then" statement. Paul is asking the question, "If someone were to have these spiritual gifts to their highest and greatest degree, but not have love, what would be the result?" The 1st "If - Then" Statement deals with the gift of tongues. It is likely he begins here, because it appears that the Corinthians had over-elevated this gift within their assembly. The 2nd "If - Then" Statement deals with the gift of prophecy, knowledge, and faith. The 3rd "If - Then" Statement deals with the gift of giving and martyrdom. Notice the results of having these gifts to their highest degree without love: 1. "I have become a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal" (13:1) 2. "I am nothing" (13:2) 3. "It profits me nothing" (13:3) Paul's Point? If I exercise supernatural gifts to the highest degree they can be exercised, but do so without love, I am nothing, it profits me nothing, and I am just a loud, irritating noise! The Qualities Of Love: 13:4-7 tell us what Love is like; what it looks like. Paul begins with 2 positive statements, telling us what Love Is: patient and kind. Then he goes on to tell us what Love Is Not and Does Not Do: jealous, brag, arrogant, act unbecomingly, seek its own, not provoked, take into account a wrong suffered, rejoice in unrighteousness. Finally, Paul switches back to what Love Does positively, and links the final 4 statements together with the phrase "all things" -- bears, believes, hopes, endures. The Permanence Of Love: 13:8-13 - Paul begins by affirming that love never fails. However, these spiritual gifts will fail, because there is coming a day in which they will no longer be needed, imperfect and partial as they are. What is the "Perfect" Paul is referring to? Notice those things that are parallel Now - we know in part we prophesy in part when I was a child I used to think, speak, reason like a child we see in a mirror dimly I know in part Then - When the Perfect comes the partial will be done away when I became a man I did away with childish things (childish ways of speaking, thinking, reasoning) we will see face to face I will know fully even as I have been fully known When the Perfect comes, must refer to the Perfect state when Christ returns, when there will be more need for prophecy, tongues, or words of knowledge, as we will know as we are even now known. This time has reference to "seeing face to face" which must be referring to the visible presence of Christ at His 2nd coming. Faith, Hope, and Love all abide now. But there is coming a day in which faith will pass into sight, hope will pass into realization, but love will always be a present reality. Practical Implications: 1. Fruit is more important than Gifts. Both are important, but if one had to choose one over another, we must choose Fruit, hands down. This Love is proof of regeneration (1Jn.3:14), whereas Gifts can be manifest by unregenerate people (Mt.7:21-23). 2. Gifts manifested without love are worthless. They don't profit others or myself. In whatever spiritual gift you exercise, pray for great love for those you serve. 3. The best way to describe love is "The Character of Jesus." Try inserting your own name in vs.4-7 where the word "love" appears. Doesn't sound very close to the truth does it?! Now try inserting the name "Jesus" where "love" appears. It fits perfectly, like a hand in a glove. Adore Jesus for His Love! 4. Pray earnestly for those qualities of love to be manifest in your life, that presently are glaringly deficient. 5. The spiritual gifts mentioned in 1 Cor. 12 such as tongues, prophecy, words of knowledge, faith, etc. will be available to Christ's church until He returns. Therefore earnestly desire those gifts that will promote the greater building up of the body of Christ.
