Paul's Theme in 1 Corinthians 12:12-31 is "One Body - Many Members" Therefore he is aiming to champion Diversity In Unity. 1. The Agent of Our Unity: The Spirit of God 2. The Enemies of Our Unity: Self-Pity: 12:14-20; 27-31 "You Don't Need Me!" (feeling useless because we do not have the gifts of someone else) Self-Sufficiency: 12: 21-26 "I Don't Need You!" (feeling superior because we have gifts others do not have) Note : both self-pity and self-sufficiency stem from pride. If the person with self-pity was not proud, he would not care that he does not have the gifts others have. The self-sufficient person proudly believes he does not need the gifts of others. Application : DON'T: Allow yourself to indulge in self-pity by comparing yourself with others (Gal.6:4). Allow yourself to be lifted up with pride by reveling in your gifts (Ezek.28:12,17; Rom.12:3-8). Presume that all believers should have the same gift (especially the gift of tongues - 12:30). DO: Drink deeply and often of the Spirit (Jn.7:37-39; 4:13-14) Trust God's goodness and wisdom in His sovereign distribution of gifts (1Cor.12:11,18). Have the same care for all God's people (1Cor.12:25; Rom.12:16). Suffer with and Rejoice with all God's people (1Cor.12:26; Rom.12:15). Earnestly Desire the Greater Gifts (1Cor.12:31; 14:1).

1 Corinthians
1 Corinthians 12:12-31
NT
nasb
For even as the body is one
and yet has many members,
and all the members of the body, though they are many, are one body,
so also is Christ.
comparison
For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body,
whether [we were] Jews or Greeks,
whether [we were] slaves or free,
series
and we were all made to drink of one Spirit.
ideaexplanation
For the body is not one member,
but [the body is] many.
negativepositive
If the foot says, "Because I am not a hand, I am not a part of the body,"
it is not for this reason any the less a part of the body.
actionresult
And if the ear says, "Because I am not an eye, I am not a part of the body,"
it is not for this reason any the less a part of the body.
If the whole body were an eye,
[then] where would the hearing be?
conditional
If the whole were hearing,
[then] where would the sense of smell be?
But now God has placed the members, each one of them, in the body,
just as He desired.
If they were all one member,
[then] where would the body be?
But now there are many members,
but [there is] one body.
alternative
And the eye cannot say to the hand, "I have no need of you";
or again the head [cannot say] to the feet, "I have no need of you."
On the contrary, it is much truer that the members of the body which seem to be weaker are necessary;
and those members of the body which we deem less honorable, on these we bestow more abundant honor,
and our less presentable members become much more presentable,
whereas our more presentable members have no need of it.
But God has so composed the body, giving more abundant honor to that member which lacked,
so that there may be no division in the body,
but that the members may have the same care for one another.
actionpurpose
And if one member suffers,
[then] all the members suffer with it;
if one member is honored,
[then] all the members rejoice with it.
actionmanner
Now you are Christ's body,
and [you are] individually members of it.
And God has appointed in the church, first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, administrations, various kinds of tongues.
All are not apostles, are they?
All are not prophets, are they?
All are not teachers, are they?
All are not workers of miracles, are they?
All do not have gifts of healings, do they?
All do not speak with tongues, do they?
All do not interpret, do they?
But earnestly desire the greater gifts.
And I show you a still more excellent way.
