My Translation: (26) And likewise the Spirit helps our weakness; for we do not know what to pray for as bound, but the Spirit himself intercedes in groanings unutterable, (27) and he who searches hearts knows what is the thought of the Spirit, because according to God he makes a petition on behalf of the holy (ones). (28) And we know that for those who love God all works together for good, those existing according to the predetermined call. (29) That those he knew beforehand, and foreordained to conform to the image of his son, for him to be the first-born among many brothers; (30) and those he foreordained, he also called; and those he called, he also justified; and those he justified, he also glorified. ESV: 26 Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. 27 And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. 28 And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. 29 For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. 30 And those whom he predestined he also called, and those whom he called he also justified, and those whom he justified he also glorified. Comments: There are three major things to note in this passage... 1. Prayer. Trials and tribulations inevitably come. Tragedy strikes, relationships break, and the alarm goes off on Monday morning. Life can be overwhelming, defeating, and sometimes it is really hard to know even what to pray for . Paul begins this section of Romans (verse 26a) by pointing out this weakness: we do not know how to pray as we ought. BUT he immediately gives us great news of great hope: The Holy Spirit himself is interceding for us. Paul is so excited by this fact that he tells us twice (verse 26b + verse 27b). We need not be discouraged when the winds of adversity try to blow us off course, we are being prayed for by the Spirit. We will not be moved. (NOTE: This is not the only time Paul tells us about a member of the Godhead interceding for us... Later in 8:34, we learn that Jesus Christ is also interceding for us before the Father. This is mind blowing truth! Why then should we be afraid?!) 2. Purchase. In verse 27, we learn that the Spirit intercedes for the saints , that is, those purchased by the blood of Jesus. Are you trusting in the saving work of Christ Jesus today? Have you placed your hope in the resurrected Christ? Are you now trusting in him for the forgiveness of sins? Then you are part of this glorious reality, then you are engulfed in and surrounded by the intercessory prayer of the Holy Spirit. Rest secured, Christian. 3. Perseverance. This passage ends with a marvelous progression. Verse 30, in my mind, is an exegetical argument for the perseverance of the saints. All the verbs here are aorist active indicative, that is, they are all past-tense. This is most striking with the word ... ἐδόξασεν, glorified. Typically when glorification is talked about in the New Testament it is a future glorification (such as 1 Peter 5:1 that speaks of the glory "to be revealed"; see also Romans 5:2, Colossians 3:4, 2 Corinthians 4:16-17). This glorification includes a new body and seeing Jesus Christ face to face. Here in Romans, Paul is so sure of our glorification through Christ, that he writes about it in the past-tense . He writes as if our glorification has already happened! Our perseverance to the end is guaranteed, saints. God predestined it, Jesus purchased it, the Holy Spirit prays for it. The entire Trinity works together in our salvation and endurance. We will persevere right into the throne room of God. Now there's a reason to worship and rejoice.
