Warning Against False Teachers 3 g As I urged you when I was going to Macedonia, remain at Ephesus so that you may charge certain persons not h to teach any different doctrine, 4 nor i to devote themselves to myths and endless j genealogies, which promote k speculations rather than the stewardship 1 from God that is by faith. 5 The aim of our charge is love l that issues from a pure heart and m a good conscience and n a sincere faith. 6 Certain persons, by o swerving from these, have wandered away into p vain discussion, 7 desiring to be teachers of the law, q without understanding either what they are saying or the things about which they make confident assertions. 8 Now we know that r the law is good, if one uses it lawfully, 9 understanding this, that the s law is not laid down for the just but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and profane, for those who strike their fathers and mothers, for murderers, 10 the sexually immoral, men who practice homosexuality, enslavers, 1 liars, perjurers, and whatever else is contrary to t sound 2 doctrine, 11 in accordance with u the gospel of the glory of v the blessed God w with which I have been entrusted.

Commentary
Paul begins his letter to Timothy reminding him of a charge that Paul had given him before. Timothy’s task had not changed: he was to remain in Ephesus in order to protect the church there from false doctrine and dangerous teachers. When we speak about the word of God without aiming to steward it, or rightly understand and apply it, we wander into pointless discussions for the sake of our own desires. Because we care too much about our own speculations and insights, we cease to truly care for the church and our handling of the word becomes damaging and dangerous. One way to aim for love “that issues from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith” (1:5) is to use the law correctly. To do this, we must understand that the law was given because of sin (1:9c-10f; Gal. 3:19). Therefore, it ought to be used for the purposes of convicting us of sin and pointing us to Christ, the one who came to set us free from the law and justify us by faith (1:11; Gal. 3:23-26). We are no longer under the law, and so we need to be careful in applying it. We cannot put ourselves back under the law, or even pick and choose what parts of the Old Covenant are still applicable. Our sin and God’s condemnation of it in the law point us to Christ, the one who fulfilled the law (Matt. 5:17) and rescued us, now made just (1:9b), to himself.
