Commentary
Paul’s instructions concerning widows continue on in the section, getting more specific. Now we have two groups of widows, one to “enroll” and the other to not “enroll.” For a widow to be enrolled (5:9, 11) means the church will care for them (5:16). This is what the command “Honor widows” meant in 5:3. Widows how are sixty years old or more should be enrolled, but only if she has lived a faithful life of good works, detailed out in 5:9b-10f. Why do we need these stipulations? Among other reasons, these older women have proven that their lives are devoted to serving the saints. If they are supported financially by the church, they will not squander the rest of their lives, but instead will continue to serve the church in whatever ways they can. Younger widows do not have such a track record yet. Some younger widows have put their newfound free-time to ill use, becoming “idlers” and “gossips and busybodies.” Because they have not spent their lives proving that they are devoted to Christ and his church, there is a chance that younger widows will remarry and leave the faith. Rather than caring for the church, they have become a burden on the church, and have even strayed after Satan! These are guidelines for wisdom when caring for all kinds of people in need in our churches. However, we must always pair compassion and grief with our wisdom, especially when we are dealing with someone who has lost a husband. God must give us the grace to intertwine love for the needy and love for the body; both are commanded and required. So, we must love grieving younger widows and help however we can, while at the same time encouraging them to continue in the faith and even remarry and bear children.
