Commentary
This section contains one of the most intense and serious charges in the New Testament. Paul calls both God and his mediator, Christ Jesus, to witness this charge to Timothy. The charge is in 6:14a: “Keep the commandment unstained and free from reproach.” This sums up the goal of this whole letter to Timothy. If Timothy follows Paul’s instructions in the ways he teaches and leads the church, cares for widows, deals with false teachers, and ordains elders and deacons must, the gospel of God will be kept from reproach and will shine forth in the world like a city of refuge set upon a hill. How is Timothy to manage this task? 6:11-12 give Timothy the means by which he can accomplish this goal. He must flee from corrupting desire, pursue the fruit of the Spirit, and fight the good fight of faith, grasping on to his hope of eternal life, Jesus Christ. This Jesus, our Lord and Christ, will appear, and it is until that time that we “fight the good fight of faith.” It is only until he comes against that we must “flee these things.” When he appears, all evil will be judged and dealt with, and we will have finally received the promise of our godliness, the eternal life that even now we are taking hold of.
