This next section, signaled in the Greek text with a referential point of departure (τὸ πνεῦμα) and the developmental conjunction δε, begins a series of sections of teaching by Paul followed directly by an exhortation for Timothy to teach these same things. This first section focuses on false teachers and, specifically, why their teaching is so destructive. Paul’s warning to Timothy begins on a practical level—some will depart from the faith. These people will depart, however, because they have devoted themselves to the demonic and deceitful teachings of people who Paul describes as insincere “liars who have seared their own consciences” (4:2). To be specific, these teachers are forbidding marriage and requiring abstinence from certain foods. Why is this such a damnable offense and twisting of doctrine? Paul gets directly at the reason for creation in 4:3-5. This is what is at stake in the twisting of doctrine. The church is not concerned with doctrine in order to keep our books orderly or our worldview tidy; we are not concerned with tradition for tradition’s sake. No, the doctrine that we are tasked with protecting has to do with why this world even exists and, beyond that, why the world was created with human beings in it. All things were created by God “to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth” (4:3c-e). That explains why we exist; to give God thanks. That explains why marriage exists; so God is seen as the greatest giver. That is why food exists; so the giver of all things gets the glory. Those who believe and know the truth should give God thanks and glory for everything that they encounter. That is both the reason for their existence and the fulfillment of their joy. We cannot pull ourselves out of the world and cease to see God’s grace in every morsel of food. Then God does not get the glory, and we do not get God. And teachers of the church must not teach believers to forsake giving God glory for his creation.
