Commentary
At the root of “different doctrine” (5:3a) is a false belief that “godliness is a means of gain” (5:5b). When at the foundation of our hearts is a desire to serve ourselves, we will become conceited and twist our teaching to serve our own purposes rather than Christ. But this is not the answer! Here is the astounding truth that Paul counters this false belief with: desiring gain is not the problem. Rather, our problem is that we think that everything but godliness is gain. Public fame, respect, riches, ability, position, comfort; getting these things is what drives our lives because we think that they are gain. On the other hand, Paul says that godliness itself is the only true gain (6:6) because we brought nothing into the world, and we will bring nothing out of the world. Therefore, all we need for our lives are things like clothing and food. Godliness itself is satisfying because to be godly is to be satisfied in God, and it brings with it the promise of eternal life with the God who satisfies.
