Commentary
In view of the destruction of those who have twisted the word to unholy purposes, Paul urges the Ephesian church to humble themselves and pray for all people, even the secular authorities over them. This somehow allows Christians to lead godly and peaceful lives. The reason behind why Paul says this is contained in 2:3-7. Moving from bottom to top: The “testimony” (2:6) is that there is one God and one mediator between God and man. This mediator, Christ Jesus, gave himself as a ransom for all (2:5c-6a). This ransom is proof that God “desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth” (2:4). It is in the eyes of this kind of gracious God that Christians leading peaceful and godly lives is a good and pleasing thing (2:3). Put another way, the act of Christians leading peaceful and godly lives in the world and loving the world enough to pray for all people, even kings, matches up perfectly with the character of God, who gave his son as mediator and ransom. Our holy and dignified lives show the world that we are commanded to love the character of our God, and will call even kings to repent and worship the true king, Christ Jesus.
