Main point summary
Whoever believes in God escapes condemnation and glorifies him. God loved humanity so much that he gave his Son Jesus so that people might choose light. Yet the unbeliever chooses darkness and so remains condemned.
“For h God so loved i the world, 1
For this is the way 36 God loved the world:
(The Son of Man is lifted up to bring an eternal choice to believe and be saved) because God loved humanity,
j that he gave his only Son,
He gave his one and only 37 Son,
that he gave (released from heaven into the pain of earth) his only Son,
that whoever believes in him
so that everyone who believes in him
so that if one believes on Christ
should not k perish
will not perish 38
then he will not lose his soul
but have eternal life.
but have eternal life. 39
but gain eternal life for his soul.
For l God did not send his Son into the world m to condemn the world,
For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, 40
For God did not send Jesus down to earth to condemn (destroy as a punishment) humanity,
but in order that the world might be saved through him.
but that the world should be saved through him.
but God gave Jesus for the sake of rescuing humanity (who was doomed without Christ).
n Whoever believes in him is not condemned,
The one who believes in him is not condemned. 41
Therefore the believer escapes condemnation,
but whoever does not believe is condemned already,
The one who does not believe has been condemned 42 already,
but the unbeliever remains condemned,
because he has not o believed in the name of the only Son of God.
because he has not believed in the name of the one and only 43 Son of God.
because he refuses to trust in the name of Jesus.
p And this is the judgment:
Now this is the basis for judging: 44
Here is why God is just in his condemnation:
q the light has come into the world,
that the light has come into the world
because light (salvation) is available to all humanity,
and r people loved the darkness rather than the light
and people 45 loved the darkness rather than the light,
yet humanity preferred to avoid salvation (trusting in and communing with God)
because s their works were evil.
because their deeds were evil.
because they persisted in sin.
t For everyone who does wicked things hates the light
For everyone who does evil deeds hates the light
For every sinner despises the light of God
and does not come to the light,
and does not come to the light,
and avoids salvation,
u lest his works should be exposed.
so that their deeds will not be exposed.
in order to prevent his sin from being known.
But whoever v does what is true w comes to the light,
But the one who practices the truth comes to the light,
But the practicing believer pursues the light of God,
so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God.”
so that it may be plainly evident that his deeds have been done in God. 46
in order to reveal the glory of God in their good works.
Our default state is condemnation, yet we have the opportunity to choose our way out of this prison of darkness. That sinful man opts to remain in chains is astonishing. Why does he so choose? It is because sin hates the light; that is, we shrink back from confessing our hidden sins. For further study: why don't we want our sins to be known? What is the root cause - pride, selfishness, love of pleasure, love of advantage? Note that the sinner ends up working to keep his sin hidden (with purpose). This condemns him on the grounds that his sin drives him to actively choose darkness. On the other hand, the believer pursues the light of God, and the good works which glorify God are the inescapable result! So the believer abounds in free life for the very love of God himself, while the sinner labors to keep his secret sins hidden. God is just in so condemning sinful humanity. He has given us every advantage and every reason to choose life and light. Praise God!
