A Good Solider of Christ

Do you want to be an active participant, with a purpose in God's kingdom? Think it over; remember three things from the Lord himself: 1. Share in his suffering as an excellent participant (vv3-6) - how well do you show up for Christ? With everything you have to offer? A good soldier avoids less worthy pursuits (David pouring out the water of Bethlehem 2Sam 23:13-17) A good athlete wins by the rules (In 1983 Yiannis Kouros, a poor composer from Greece, ran 156 miles from Athens to Sparta in the first Spartathlon; while he was accused of cheating yet his performance stood - 3 hours ahead of everyone else, and Yiannis holds the four fastest record times to this day) "He is the only athlete for whom an accusation of cheating eventually became an honor" A good farmer invests more than his muscles into the crop (" Future Farmers of America” – today known as the National FFA Organization – was founded by a group of young farmers in 1928. Their mission was to prepare future generations for the challenges of feeding a growing population. Today, more than 700,000 student members nationwide are engaged in a range of agricultural education activities. If you're part of FFA, you know that working hard is also about working smart - it's not just about sweat but also about commitment and applying all of yourself to achieve your goals. ) 2. Endure if you suffer for preaching the authentic gospel (vv8-10) - are you ready to expect hardship and mocking for the sake of the gospel? v8 - The Jesus we proclaim is authentic - he descended from David and arose from the dead - The entire OT is, in part, the story of how God preserved a people and kept his Davidic covenant of a tender shoot arising from parched ground (Isaiah 53) v9 - Opponents of the gospel may chain men, but they can't chain the word of God! - consider how Paul and Silas were chained and yet the jailor and his family were converted to Christ! (Acts 16:16-40) v10 - Those God calls obtain salvation in Jesus Christ and eternal glory! We might summarize 1 Thessalonians 1 in this way: God chose you and empowered you through the gospel of Jesus, and your joyful reception by the Holy Spirit caused you to turn from useless idols towards the Son, raised from the dead, who delivers you from the wrath to come. 3. Those who die with him and endure will live and reign with him (vv11-13) If we die for Jesus, we will live eternally with him - If we endure we will reign If we deny Jesus, he will deny us If we are faithless, Jesus remains and his kingdom will go on without us So, will you be left behind? Out of this wonderful kingdom that God is building because of your faithlessness? Or are you all in - ready to be identified with Christ and suffer for his name? This calling is dangerous and demands all of you - everything that God put inside of you when he made you. For such a time and season as this - God calls you.
