Here's some glorious questions and meager answers that I asked and told myself: 1. What’s the apodosis to the protasis of v 2? It could be v 13, or it could be the appositional phrase in v 1, “ ὁ δέσμιος τοῦ Χριστοῦ ὑπὲρ ὑμῶν τῶν ἐθνῶν .” Hoehner says it’s v 15, and there’s a good chance he’s right. But at the moment, I’m not seeing it. It seems much more reasonable to me that Paul is explaining how his imprisonment is on behalf of the Gentiles. It is on their behalf inasmuch as he has reached them with the Gospel, inasmuch as they “heard of the administration of the grace of God given to [him] for [them].” He wants his imprisonment to be on behalf of anyone who reads this letter, so he feels a need here to explain this administration of grace, which is somewhat unique to him. I would want to put more time into analyzing this before I’d stand up for my opinion. Don't tase me, bro. 2. What is Paul’s specific “insight into the mystery of Christ” that he’s referring to in v 4a? The insight is first given in v 7-8, that the gospel is a message to the Gentiles of unity in Christ, administered by a man not worthy to bring it. Paul then explains that this administration was entrusted to such an unworthy man for two reasons: 1. To show the wealth of Christ (3:8). 2. To show how this wealth is administered (3:9). Presumably, sending the most possibly unworthy person as an ambassador of Christ underscores the glory of the grace with which the wealth of Christ is administered. And the gospel is administered not just by grace to Paul, but by grace through Paul to the Gentiles. This shows the wisdom of God to the heavenly authorities (3:10), in that he glorifies his grace by twice the amount of the sin of the ambassador, once in saving the sinner, and again in using the sinner’s redemption to preach the gospel to others. 3. What is Paul talking about when he say “ διὰ τῆς πίστεως αὐτοῦ ” in v 12? Christ’ faithfulness? Christ’s faith? Our faith in Christ? Hoehner prefers taking this as an objective genitive, whereas O’Brien goes with subjective. I side with O’Brien. Our confidence is not based on our own faith, but on Christ’s faithfulness, or our inclusion in Christ’s perfect faith. We are not to have faith in faith, but faith in Christ. It seems unlike Paul to intend that we focus on our own faith—rather than some attribute of Christ—when speaking of confidence before God.

Τούτου χάριν ἐγὼ Παῦλος ὁ δέσμιος τοῦ Χριστοῦ ὑπὲρ ὑμῶν τῶν ἐθνῶν
Because of this, I, Paul, the prisoner of Christ on behalf of you Gentiles--
