SUMMARY OF COLOSSIANS 3:1-4 Turning from the situational and theological arguments of chapters 1 and 2, Paul begins his ethical instructions to the church at Colossae. Because of their union with Christ in death (v.3), they are to no longer set their minds on the things of earth (v.2). Instead, since they have been united with 'their life' - Christ - in his resurrection (v.1a, 4), they need to live out that truth by setting their minds on the things above (cf. to 'putting on the new man' in 3:10f.). VARIOUS NOTES ON ARC v. 1 - Note how the If/Th of v. 1 is more than just a suggestion, but a command; 1bc could almost be an inference of 1a. One of the keys to the interpretation of Col 3:1-4 is to notice the thematic / "geographical" chiasm: A - things above (v1) B - things on earth (v2) B' - death in Christ (v3) A' - alive in Christ (v4) This helps to support the grouping of vv 1-2 together and vv 3-4 together, with the latter supporting the former. Theologically, the Christian life (vv. 1-2) is lived on the basis of union with Christ in death and resurrection life (vv. 3-4). vv. 3-4 - Note the parallels between these verses: verse 3: (a) For you died (b) and your life (c) is hidden with Christ (d) in God. verse 4: (a) When Christ appears (b) who is your life (c) you will appear with Him (d) in glory.
