BRIEF SUMMARY OF COL 1:9-12 Paul prays that the Colossians be filled with the knowledge of God's will. For what purpose ? So that they would walk in a manner worthy of the Lord. How will the walk in such a way? By doing the 4 things found in 10c-12b. MY MORE TECHNICAL SUMMARY OF COL 1:9-12 This next sub-section of Colossians, beginning in verse 9 and continuing through the first part of verse 12, provides us with the basic content of Paul's prayer that was first mentioned in 1:3. (The prayer actually continues through 1:23, although this is sometimes overlooked.) Its connection back to 1:3-8 ("for this reason," 1:9a) cannot be ignored. Because of what God has already done in the gospel through Christ and the Spirit (esp. 1:5-6), Paul confidently prays for what God will continue to do . This untiring prayer ("since the day we heard, we have not ceased," 1:9a; cf. 1:3-4a) begins on the intellectual level with the hope that the church will "be filled with the knowledge of his will" (1:9b), but it moves very naturally to knowledge-fortified behavior: "so that you walk in a manner worthy of the Lord" (1:10a). Hence, the purpose of being filled with the knowledge of God's will is that they will walk in a manner worthy of the Lord (where this itself culminates in the goal of "pleasing" God; 1:10b). 1:10c-12b is made up of four adverbial participles, each answering the question: How does one walk in a manner worthy of the Lord? One must (1) bear fruit in every good work, (2) grow in the knowledge of God, (3) be strengthened in all power for endurance and patience, and (4) give thanks with joy. [[**from my notes on a class I teach on Colossians at our church**]] HANDOUT FROM MY CLASS ON THIS PASSAGE > Basic Content of Paul’s Prayer (v. 9) - “ filled with the knowledge of his will ” – Knowledge of God’s will is not primarily personal insight into what he wants us to do with our lives, but it has more to do with a robust understanding of God’s whole saving purpose in Jesus Christ, which then leads to a change in character for individual Christians. ‘Knowledge,’ which crops up elsewhere in Colossians (1:6; 2:2; 3:10), forms the basis of transformed living (1:10-12a) and thanksgiving (1:12f.), and is the central characteristic of humanity now renewed in Christ (3:10). > Purpose of Being Filled with the Knowledge of God’s Will – So That We Will Walk in a Manner Worthy of the Lord (v. 10a) - “ walk ” – Paul often uses the verb ‘walk’ in connection with the new life now lived in the Spirit. It’s a Jewish metaphor for conducting or behaving oneself. - “ manner worthy of the Lord ” – “The idea isn't that we are worthy by virtue of how we walk but that we should walk in a way that reflects or displays how much HE is worthy of such obedience on our part.” – Sam Storms - “ pleasing Him in all respects ” – This is the ultimate goal of walking in a manner worthy of the Lord, that we seek to glorify Him in contrast to glorifying ourselves. > How does one walk in a manner worthy of the Lord? (vv. 10b-12a) (1) By bearing fruit in every good work . Even though a Christian does not earn salvation by works, a Christian’s life will give evidence of good works through the power of the Holy Spirit (see Eph 2:10; Gal 5:22-23; Titus 3:8; Rom 7:4). (2) By growing in the knowledge of God . There’s a kind of spiral here. Paul prays that we will be filled with a knowledge of God’s will so that we will walk in a manner worthy of him. But part of walking in a manner worthy of him is to grow in our knowledge of God! It’s so often the case in the Christian life that understandings leads to growth, and this growth leads to even deeper understanding and experiential knowledge. (3) By being strengthened through God’s power to endure hardship . As Christians, we are promised that hardship will come at some point (see Phil 1:29). Part of walking in a manner worthy of Christ means enduring in such a way that we are relying on God’s strength and might. (4) By giving thanks to the Father with joy . The “with joy” is an important phrase. This thanksgiving is not a begrudging gratitude or a kind of flippant appreciation for God’s blessings in Christ. Only thanksgiving offered with sincere joy pleases God. > Another Reason to be Thankful – A ‘New Exodus’ (vv. 12b-1 4) - “ inheritance ” – In the Old Testament, the ‘inheritance’ referred to the land promised to Abraham and Israel. Here it finds fulfillment in the work of Christ, and is widened to include Gentiles and the entire New Creation that is to come! - “ kingdom ” – In the Bible, ‘kingdom’ doesn’t emphasize land or realm as much as the king himself and the reality of his Lordship. In this case, it is the kingdom of Jesus Christ! - “ redemption ” – Within biblical theology, ‘redemption’ is rooted in God’s action for his people when they were in Egypt. In the fullest sense, our redemption is out of the kingdom of darkness and sin and evil. So What? (1) If knowing God’s will is more about understanding God’s plan of salvation and walking in a manner worthy of Him, how does this change the way you might think through a decision that you may have to make in the future? Like where to move? What job to take? (2) As we see in 1:13-14, the Bible sometimes uses the imagery of a ‘kingdom’ to talk about the realities of the Christian life. Think through some of the implications of this truth: that you either belong to the kingdom of darkness (in submission to its king) or to the kingdom of God (and in submission to its king). In such a framework, what would it mean to walk in sin if you were a part of the kingdom of God? How does this imagery of ‘kingdom’ help us when we talk about our continuing battle against sin?
