There are two main sections here in which Paul has the same goal: to describe to the church at Colossae the true nature, motivation, and purpose of his ministry in order that no one can deceive them about what Paul is really doing or trying to accomplish. In the first section, Paul describes His ministry as proclaiming Christ, warning and teaching everyone accordingly with the purpose of developing mature believers in Christ v. 28). In verses 24-27, Paul emphasizes that the manner of his work is best described as joyful suffering. In verse 29, Paul makes clear that the source of his power for his work is Christ at work in him. Paul expands on his purpose for ministry (creating mature believers in Christ) in 2:1-3, to encourage hearts, to knit together in love, and to lead believers to full assurance in the gospel of Christ. In verses 2:4-5, Paul gives the reason for this entire discourse: to prevent the church at Colossae from being deceived about Paul and his ministry.

Νῦν χαίρω ἐν τοῖς παθήμασιν ὑπὲρ ὑμῶν
Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake,

and in my flesh I am filling up what is lacking in Christ's afflictions for the sake of his body, that is, the church,

to make the word of God fully known, the mystery hidden for ages and generations but now revealed to his saints.
οἷς ἠθέλησεν ὁ θεὸς γνωρίσαι τί τὸ πλοῦτος τῆς δόξης τοῦ μυστηρίου τούτου ἐν τοῖς ἔθνεσιν,
