The Central Idea: His divine power has given us everything we need for maturity in Christ. Insights: Shepherd-teachers: I'm not a big fan of seeing hendiadys in too many places, but it does seem like the structure around 'shepherd-teachers' requires it here. First, it appears that the article before shepherds must govern teachers. Second, the transition to the coordinating conjunction kai sets it apart as being unique from the c.c.'s de which precede it. The idea is supported by Jesus own ministry: Mark 6:34 - And when He went ashore, He saw a great multitude, and He felt compassion for them because they were like sheep without a shepherd; and He began to teach them many things. Shepherding involves teaching. Prophets: Given the context of the victory that Christ won in his death and resurrection and the fact that these gifts were purchased at that time to give to his bride so that she might grow up to maturity, the gift of prophesy here must not be referring to the OT prophets, but must be referring to post resurrection prophesy.
