The Central Idea: Since God has already given you everything you need to live a godly life, you should grow in godliness. Yes: be zealous to be godly. Explanations: 1-2 - I see a loose relationship between verse 1 and verse 2. The action of verse one is the implied verb, "write." In this sense, it is, "I Peter, am writing to you all ..." Then I see verse 2 as the purpose of Peter's writing, "I am writing in order that grace and peace might be multiplied to you through your knowledge of Jesus." I'm purposefully leaving the introductory verses alone, though it could be argued that the "as" of verse 3 indicates that Peter sees a relationship between 2 and 3. At this time, I'm more inclined to see the "as" as a pointer to the verses 5-9; "As God has done ..., therefore you do ..." 3-11 - For the rest of this section, I see three main subsections: 3-4, 5-9, 10-11. Cross-References: 1 - Slave/servant: “Peter’s focus here is less on his humility than on his God-given authority (see Gen. 32:10; Jdg. 2:8; Ps. 89:3; Je. 26:5; Am. 3:7)", Dick Lucas, page 31. 5a - 2 Corinthians 9:10 “He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and increase the harvest of your righteousness.” Galatians 3:5 “Does he who supplies the Spirit to you and works miracles among you do so by works of the law, or by hearing with faith.” 6a - Paul reasons with Felix about self-control in Acts 24:25, “And as he reasoned about righteousness and self-control and the coming judgment, Felix was alarmed and said, “Go away for the present. When I get an opportunity I will summon you.” He also puts self-control in his listing of the fruit of the Spirit in Gal. 5:22-23, “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control ; against such things there is no law.” 6b - Titus 2:2 “Older men are to be sober-minded, dignified, self-controlled , sound in faith, in love, and in steadfastness ( patient endurance ). See also, 1 Timothy 6:11-12 “But as for you, O man of God, flee these things. Pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness , gentleness. Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the everlasting life to which you were called and about which you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses.” 8c - Titus 3:14 “Our people must learn to devote themselves to good works, so as to help cases of urgent need, in order that they might not be unfruitful .” 10a Ephesians 4:1 “I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called ,” 2 Thessalonians 1:11 To this end we always pray for you, that our God may make you worthy of his calling and may fulfill every resolve for good and every work of faith by his power,” 10c - James 3:2 “For we all stumble in many ways, and if anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect man, able also to bridle his whole body.”

Simeon Peter, a slave and an apostle of Jesus Christ, to those who have obtained by lot a faith of like kind to ours by the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ.

His divine power has granted [pfct] to us all things for life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence,
by which he has granted to us his precious and very great promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desire.
For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge,
and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness,
and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love.

For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they keep you from being ineffective or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
For whoever lacks these qualities is so nearsighted that he is blind, having forgotten that he was cleansed from his former sins.

Therefore, brothers, be all the more diligent to make your calling and election sure, for if you practice these qualities you will never fall.
