3 We bless God because he has blessed us. Specifically: 4a-b God has chosen us to be holy & blameless. 4d-6b God has predestined us to be his sons, resulting in our giving him praise! It is important to note, God's election and predestination are not abstract theological concepts, but rather, each has a specific end. First, those who are chosen are set apart for a specific purpose, namely, that they might be holy and blameless. It is very important that we recognize that this election is not merely a past act with future implications. Primarily, we were chosen in the past in order that we might be holy and blameless right now! This is the whole point of the rest of the letter. We are being redeemed from this present evil world. Our lives must reflect that purchase. Secondly, we were predestined (a parallel concept to the temporal "before the foundation of the world") to be the sons of God. And as we see elsewhere, sons must obey their father and they receive the inheritance of their father. This gloriously gracious act, is redounding to God's praise. This will be seen more clearly in the statements about the church's role of revealing the manifold wisdom of God.
