Central Idea: Since Jesus has done his part (verse 3-4) and because God promises effectiveness and fruitfulness to those who persevere, be diligent to grow in grace. Explanations: As indicated in the central idea, this section is the logical inference of the truth that Jesus has given us everything we need to be godly. It is because Jesus has already done all (note again the perfect tenses of verses 4-5) that we can have confidence that our effort will not be in vain (neither ineffective nor unfruitful). Insights: Fruit of the Spirit - It is interesting to note that many of these 'virtues' that we are to add to our faith are listed as spiritual fruit in other areas. Questions: Double Ground - Does the γὰρ of verse 9 ground verse 8 or is verse 9 a secondary ground to the broader section of verses 5-7? As per the arc, I'm inclined to see verse 9 grounding the whole and not just verse 8, but I'm open on this one. Progression - I think Hafemann argues that the series of virtues strung together in verses 5-7 are not placed in any logical order and I tend to agree. To the degree that the list begins with faith and ends in love, not to mention the verbal concept of "add to", I could be easily convinced the other direction.
