The Central Idea: To walk in wisdom is to walk in the Spirit: to walk in the Spirit is to be fruitful Explanations: I’m not convinced that the relationship between 15-17 and 18-21 is one of Id/Exp, but I don’t think it is that bad of an idea. There are a couple of reasons why I am taking this way. First, I see 18-21 as another Id and 5:22-6:9 as an Exp. So, the relationship is stronger between these sections than the one I’m point on in 5:15-21. That said, 6:10-20 is a set of Inferential commands given in response to the instruction found in 5:18-6:9, yet it has a strong connection to 5:16b (‘for the days are evil’) with its like comment in 6:13, “withstand in the evil day.” Secondly, I’m inclined to see the whole passage that follows as a fuller Exp of what the will of the Lord is. Don’t be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is, namely, be filled with the Spirit to the end that you bear the fruit of the Spirit is all the ways outlined between 5:19-6:9. Since these reasons may seem rather weak, I would not fight with one who sees merely a coordinate relationship between 15-17 and 18-21. Insights: You can’t claim to be filled with the Spirit and yet be an ungrateful man who hates to sing with the congregation and abuse your wife or refuse to submit to proper authority. Wine/Spirit: a common symbol of the potency of the Spirit: causing one to act against the more normal nature. The extent to which we will give thanks when we are filled with the Holy Spirit is amazing: ‘always and for everything.’ The wisdom of this world rejects authority. This is a key stage in the development of a mind of Christ. To accept proper authority (both for the individual in the office and those under his authority) is other-worldly. It is wisdom that comes from above. Questions: What does it mean that the “days are evil?” I’m inclined to think about it through the lens of 6:13. Satan is out to devour. These are evil times that we live in. In fact, in the last days, things will get even worse. Children will be disobedient. Cross-References: Lesson:
