Notes
Paul deals with the question of whether the way of justification by faith is something entirely new. It might have seemed to the Jew like that. Twice he mentions the witness of the prophets and the law. Now, he shows that even Abraham and David were justified by faith apart from works. The way a Jew or Gentile was justified was always the same. The way of salvation is the same in the Old and New Testament. Some Jews were blind to see it despite their dedication to the Old Testament. Others saw it, but were tempted to trust in their works. Paul wanted to help theses Jews to see the truth. Vers 1: What does flesh mean? It means any outward accomplishment man can trust in.
