Notes
In the 16th century, a German theologian, Martin Luther, rediscovered in the Bible the true nature of God in Jesus Christ from which the Roman Catholic Church had drifted away for personal gain. Martin Luther's rediscovery of "Scripture alone, Grace alone, Faith alone" set many people free from the Catholic Church's spiritual and financial oppression. This led to people who were once firmly united to fundamentally disagreements, which intensified dramatically and led to a devastating 30-year war between Protestants and Catholics in Europe. The belief in Jesus Christ has caused difficulty in this world throughout the last 2000 years because it has set people spiritually free from oppression. Oppressors do not give up their prey easily because it comes at a loss for them; that is, in financial or influential ways. Similar in Jesus's days with the Jewish leaders: 3:32-34 The Jewish leaders order Jesus's arrest The crowd was divided about their opinion of Jesus, as stated earlier. Now, the Pharisees were concerned about those who spoke well of Jesus and send temple guards to arrest Him. It appears that the temple guards attempted a peaceful arrest and thereby avoid conflict because of the people that spoke well of Him. As the temple guards looked for an opportunity, Jesus continued to speak and revealed more of His divine nature. He once again declared that God had sent Him and foretold His soon return to God the Father. 3:35-36 The Jewish leader's denial about Jesus divine nature The Jewish leaders denied Jesus's claim to divinity and rationalized among themselves where He possibly would be out of their reach.
