Baptism of the Holy Spirit
Notes
The following is John's testimony of Jesus being the promised "Lamb of God" and "Son of God". John identified Jesus as the Lamb of God, just as God had prophesied 700 years earlier through Isaiah: " He was oppressed and He was afflicted, Yet He did not open His mouth; Like a lamb that is led to slaughter, And like a sheep that is silent before its shearers, So He did not open His mouth." ( Isaiah 53:7 NASB) John did not know what that meant for Jesus. God used John to testify of Jesus, even though John had the expectation of the ruling Messiah who would free Israel from Rome. John testified that Jesus was the Messiah because he saw the Spirit descending on Jesus (1:33) and not that John's expectations of deliverance from Rome were in some measure fulfilled. Jesus is yet to come to judge and rule, but John witnessed the suffering Messiah as accurately prophesied by Isaiah about Jesus' trial and crucifixion. When John identified Jesus as the Son of God, he meant to convey with "Son" that Jesus was from God and was in the likeness of God. Many people had and still have trouble believing that. To address that problem, it is fundamental to know that God is not at all like fallen men. He is not like the people that have done wrong, wounded, abused, and destroyed others. God is distinct or holy and separate from everything people know. How can people relate to God if he is that holy? Well, that is why Jesus Christ came into the world as a human being. This, on the other hand, brought again a challenge with it. Now people just saw the human part of Jesus Christ. They could not see beyond Jesus the human. So God announced Jesus Christ through many prophets in the old testament, so that when he'd come, people would see that what was promised was fulfilled in Jesus Christ. John gives a weighty testimony about Jesus and later Jesus even confirmed this many times because He was accused of blasphemy in trying to make himself like God. Eventually, His claim to be the Son of God was the reason for why he was declared guilty and punished to be put to death. The accusers tried hard but could not find any wrong deed - He has done no wrong, nor could He have done any wrong because God cannot do anything wrong. Unlike every other human being that has ever lived on planet earth. John baptized or immersed people in the water. Now, Jesus immersed people in the Holy Spirit. The baptism of the Holy Spirit was after Jesus ascension and happened on the Jewish Feast of Weeks. It was an event that drew devoted Jews from all nations together to Jerusalem. Luke recorded the baptism of the Holy Spirit in Acts 2:2-4 " And there appeared to them tongues as of fire distributing themselves, and they rested on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit was giving them utterance. " The result of the baptism of the Holy Spirit was quite remarkable! People of different languages were able to communicate with the apostles. Peter, who denied the Lord only weeks before, preached boldly Jesus Christ crucified and 3000 souls confessed to being sinners and received the forgiveness of sins in Jesus Christ. And all this just in one Day! A parallel could be drawn to Jesus conversation with Nicodemus in John 3. The baptism of the Holy Spirit is like to be born of the Spirit. A soul that is born of the Spirit is a whole new created spiritual person that relates to God as His child, and not anymore as His enemy. It seems that some dear Christians are a little confused in regard to the baptism of the Spirit. Some are still on the search for a greater blessing, but they have already received all blessings with the Spirit in Christ when they became to know Him.

(Revelation 5:8 NASB) saying with a loud voice, “Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power and riches and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing.” (Revelation 5:12 NASB) 6:1 Then I saw when the Lamb broke one of the seven seals, and I heard one of the four living creatures saying as with a voice of thunder, “Come.” (Revelation 6:1 NASB)
