Proverbs #4-2 The Counsels of Wisdom 9-6-2017 I. Intro- Proverbs 1:8-33 A. The book of Proverbs is for wisdom , discipline , it is for understanding words of insight , for acquiring a disciplined life , and for doing what is right, just, and fair. In these verses it is declared that the “fear of the Lord” and the wise use of knowledge that results from it will be manifest in the hearing of godly instruction and the keeping of godly rules [ verses 8-9 ], the avoiding the path of bad company [ verses 10-19 ], and the walking in wisdom’s path [ verses 20-33 ]. We will pick up with the last of the three divisions of this chapter, as we left off and did not cover it last week. Even in these early stages of the book of Proverbs we can already see the wisdom that God is communicating to us and will continue to throughout the book. B. As we live and move and have our being in this life the things from the early part of this chapter have a great impact upon our life. The fear of God will manifest itself in our lives by our realization that we are to follow the instruction of God and also are responsible to keep His commandments. This even a little child can understand as their parents expect obedience out of them, and we find blessing in life if we apply this same wisdom to our everyday lives. This understanding will shape and mold our choices and decisions. It will lead us to refrain from evil company and not to lay aside what we believe, or what God expects from us to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season with those that are running to mischief. III. THE FOLLY OF REJECTING THE PATH OF WISDOM [verses 20-33] - Having shown how dangerous it is to hearken to the voice of evil, in these verses Solomon shows how dangerous it is not to hearken to the voice of God. In other words, it is equally as dangerous to not hearken to the voice of Wisdom as it is to follow the evildoers and participate in their evil deeds. 1. The Call And Promise Of Wisdom [ verses 20-23 ] ➲ Wisdom is Available- She cries in the streets, in the chief place of Concourse, in the city she utters her words. As James 1:5 says all we need to do is seek wisdom from God and it can be ours. God has not hidden it from us, but reveals it through His word. If we are not receiving wisdom it is not because it is no available. revelation 1:3 ➲ Wisdom comes in the Proclaiming of God's word! -This is the duty of the church to present the wisdom of God unto Man. Making him first wise unto His sinful condition, and then unto salvation, and afterwards towards living life pleasing to God. We will find wisdom in God's proclaimed word, His written word, and His read word! ➲ As we turn at the instruction of Wisdom we receive; -Verse 23; wisdom is seen as reproof which means; Blame expressed to the face; censure for a fault; reprehension. Wisdom will reprove us of the errors in our lives, and it is our duty to turn at the wisdom of God from our sin to His ways. - As we do this wisdom will pour out her spirit to us, meaning that we will gain more and more knowledge concerning the things of God, we will gain more and more ability to make right choices in our practical every day lives. -Enlightenment- We will be further enlightened, we will learn more and more. 2. The Call Of Wisdom Is Referred To By Four Terms [ verses 24-25 ]. ➲ “ I have called ” [ verse 24 ]. This is a general call. Wisdom call over and over again and many times we are too occupied with the affairs of life or sinful pursuits that we miss wisdom's call to us! ➲ “ I have stretched out my hand ” [ verse 24 ]. This is an offer . This shows wisdom's desire to be received, to make a difference in our lives, and it shows God's desire for us to be wise in His ways. ➲ “ counsel ” [verse 25]. This speaks of advice, guidance, and direction that is found in the Wisdom of God. Think of it as Godly advice for live, Godly guidance in make choices, and Godly direction for the path of our lives. ➲ “ reproof ” [verse 25]. This speaks of rebuke, and admonishment. Repeated again in this section it shows the great value that wisdom has in correcting us, and though we do not like it, that is exactly what we need. 2 Timothy 3:16 Wisdom is profitable as the scriptures are! 3. The Rejection Of Wisdom’s Call [ verses 24-32 ]. The rejection of wisdom is referred to in six different ways. ➲ “ ye refused ” [ verse 24 ]. This suggests a declining, turning down, rejecting, and spurning the instruction of wisdom. ➲ “ no man regarded ” [ verse 24 ]. This suggests a failure to seriously consider and to fairly judge the instruction of wisdom. ➲ “ set at nought ” [ verse 25 ]. This suggests the treating of the instruction of wisdom as nothing. ➲ “ would none of my reproof ” [ verse 25 ]. This suggests a failure to receive the reproof and corrections of wisdom. ➲ “ would none of my counsel ” [ verse 30 ]. This suggests a failure to receive the advice and guidance of wisdom. ➲ “ despised all my reproof ” [ verse 30 ]. This suggests a failure to appreciate the correction of wisdom. -- There were many times in our childhood when we neglected the wise counsel of our Parents, either not caring, or that we knew better than they; Only to find out the hard way that they were right. We do this many times in our lives today as well in rejecting wisdom, we either do not care or think that we know better, either way we end up worse off for the choice. Turing away from the wisdom of God is so ingrained in our flesh that we do it naturally. 4. The Results Of Rejecting Wisdom’s Call [ verses 26-32 ]. - Let us be sure that there are consequences to rejecting the call of wisdom upon our lives, that is if we neglect the instruction and law of our God, if we walk with evil doers in the way, we will regret it. ➲ " Laugh " Verse 26- There will be a laughing at our calamities, by wisdom and in turn God. ➲ " Mock " Verse 26- When our Fear, or undue anxiety and preoccupation with worldly things, comes upon us because we are not fearing God. There is no protection where we have neglected wisdom! ➲ " Ignore " Verse 28- God will not Answer in our time of need ➲ " Loneliness " Verse 28- God will not be found and there will be great loneliness! - There is always Grace with the Lord, there is always the hope of forgiveness for the saved, but God does punish those of His that neglect His instruction and forsake His law. 5. The Promise To Those Who Hearken Unto The Instruction Of Wisdom [ verse 33 ]. Hearkening unto wisdom, one receives a conscious security, and finds deliverance from carnal cares and fears . ---The wise instruction and rules of godly parents if listened to and retained will add beauty to and improve life, and will provide protection from the enticements of unsafe and toxic people, causing one to listen to and respond to the voice of wisdom and ultimately God. We like to listen to ourselves, to earthly wisdom, and common thinking so very often, but what we need to do is seek the wisdom of God, seeking it will strenthen our lives and give us biblical skill in living that we so desperately need in our lives today.

20 Wisdom crieth without; she uttereth her voice in the streets: 21 She crieth in the chief place of concourse, in the openings of the gates: in the city she uttereth her words, saying, 22 How long, ye simple ones, will ye love simplicity? and the scorners delight in their scorning, and fools hate knowledge? 23 Turn you at my reproof: behold, I will pour out my spirit unto you, I will make known my words unto you. 24 Because I have called, and ye refused; I have stretched out my hand, and no man regarded; 25 But ye have set at nought all my counsel, and would none of my reproof: 26 I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your fear cometh; 27 When your fear cometh as desolation, and your destruction cometh as a whirlwind; when distress and anguish cometh upon you. 28 Then shall they call upon me, but I will not answer; they shall seek me early, but they shall not find me: 29 For that they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the LORD: 30 They would none of my counsel: they despised all my reproof. 31 Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own devices. 32 For the turning away of the simple shall slay them, and the prosperity of fools shall destroy them. 33 But whoso hearkeneth unto me shall dwell safely, and shall be quiet from fear of evil.
