Satan initially challenges Jesus' identity, then offers him his destiny, but without paying the price of the cross.
Matthew 4:1-11
Then Jesus was led into the wilderness by the Spirit to be tempted by the devil.
And when he fasted forty days and forty nights,
afterward he was hungry.
And the tempter coming said to him, "If you are the son of God,
tell these stones to become bread."
But replying he said, "It is
written, 'Not upon bread alone does man live,
but upon every word coming out through the mouth of God.'"
Then the devil took him to the holy city and stood him on the parapet of the temple.
And he said to him, "If you are the son of God,
throw yourself down,
for it is written 'He will command his angels concerning you, and they will lift you up with their hands,
lest you strike your foot upon a stone.'"
Jesus said to him, "It is written also, 'You shall not tempt the Lord your God.'"
Again the devil took him to an exceedingly high mountain and showed to him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory.
And he said to him, "All these things I will give to you,
if, bowing down you worship me."
Then Jesus said to him, "Depart from me, Satan.
For it is written, 'Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.'"
Then the devil left him, and behold angels came and ministered to him.
