Teaching Points : v. 26: Paul asks us to look in the mirror & be honest. We're not much! Not wise. Not powerful. Not "noble." v. 27-28: BUT GOD! Note 3-fold "God chose ... in order to..." v. 29: The reason He did this (26-28) is so that no one could boast in His presence. v. 30: We are in Christ because of God. Period. When we are in Christ He is our wisdom from God righteousness sanctification redemption The reason for all of this ... that we are unwise, weak, ignoble; that God chose the foolish, weak, lowly, despised & nothingness; that we are thereby compelled to set aside all these things before God; That through God we have our wisdom, righteousness, sanctification and redemption in Christ alone ... is so that we will boast only in the Lord. Discussion / Application Points: v. 26-29 What does this do to self-esteem? We are not about self-esteem. Much better to be about God-esteem. What are the foolish, the weak, the low & despised, the things that are not? What has God done to all of these things? If God has so treated them, why do we stay so attached to them? What value are these things when you stand before God? What will you do with them then? (BTW: When do you stand before God? ) If we are always before God, is there ever a time to place value on these things? v. 30-31: This reteaches what the previous section taught, but takes it a little deeper. (30) From the positive side, what does it mean that Christ is your wisdom, righteousness, sanctification, redemption? (31) How do you boast in the Lord? CF: Gal 6:14. What does this add? How do you boast in the cross? By recognizing that every good thing that we have, and every bad thing that God turns into good, is only because of the cross. How does this add practical application to our Church's byline: "Keeping the Cross Central?"

For consider your calling, brothers:
ὅτι οὐ πολλοὶ σοφοὶ κατὰ σάρκα,

οὐ πολλοὶ δυνατοί,
not many were powerful,
not many were of noble birth.

God chose what is weak in the world
to shame the strong;
God chose what is low and despised in the world,
even things that are not,
to bring to nothing things that are,

negativepositive
so that no human being might boast in the presence of God.

And because of him you are in Christ Jesus,
who became to us wisdom from God,
righteousness and sanctification and redemption,
so that, as it is written, "Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord."
