Assignment #9 - James 1:26-27
Do you have the true religion?
Published February 11th, 2017
26 If anyone thinks himself to be religious, and yet does not 1 a bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, this man’s religion is worthless. 27 Pure and undefiled religion a in the sight of our God and Father is this: to b visit c orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself unstained 1 by d the world.
Some men openly declare they have the true religion, but their actions demonstrate otherwise; they are only deceiving themselves. Religion is one of the heart and is vindicated through our actions, particularly through the careful restraint over the expression of our thoughts and emotions (Matt. 15:18). One who does not govern the use of his tongue does not have the true religion, because true religion reflects the nature of God's love in 1) aiding widows and orphans, those who are unable to provide for themselves; and 2) being holy, separate from the world. (Matt. 25:34-40)
