Notes
I. Right and Wrong Fear a. Wrong Fear – Fear of Man (26, 28, and 31) i. Reason 1: Nothing is covered that will not be revealed, or hidden that will not be known. (26) 1. Option 1: The seemingly unvindicated, unjust persecution 2. Option 2: A doctrinal mystery now to be revealed a. You could make a case for both of these. 3. I lean towards option one. Mainly, because of the “nothing” statement. Also, because the rest of the text lends itself to the fear of persecution. a. However, if you wanted to argue that because its related to the proclamation its more doctrinal, that’s fine too. ii. Reason 2: They can’t kill the soul. (28) 1. If man could destroy the soul in hell, that would be scary. 2. The point, our lives, our fears, our loves, etc., should be mainly influenced by what ultimately (and/or mainly) influences our lives. iii. Reason 3: Man can only do to you what God ordains they do to you. (29-31) 1. The sparrow falling, I think, is less about God’s sovereignty over the smallest things, and more about the fact that if you fall in your witness to Christ, you don’t fall apart from your Father, in fact, he is behind all of it. Therefore, don’t think that your fall, when it happens is a mistake, a loss, or meaningless. And especially, don’t fear it. iv. Reason 4: If fear causes you to deny Christ in front of man, Christ will deny you before God. (33) 1. Our relationship with Christ is immediately tied to our relationship with God. To deny Christ out of fear severs the relationship from the trinity. 2. Therefore, don’t fear man. b. Fear God (A better way) (vs 28) i. Reason 1: He has power over the body and the soul. (28) ii. Reason 2: He cares for you. (29-31) iii. Reason 3: If you acknowledge Christ, Christ will acknowledge you before the Father. (32)
