Now concerning w the times and the seasons, brothers, 1
Now let me write to you with more detail as to the specifics of Christ's return:
x you have no need to have anything written to you.
although you have no need for me to elaborate really any more on this.
For you yourselves are fully aware that y the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night.
The reason I say this is that you know totally that Jesus will come back into this world when the people least expect it.
While p eople are saying,
When the people of the world say the following:
“There is peace and security,”
"Oh, are lives are so wonderful and perfect. We have all that we need!"
then z sudden destruction will come upon them a as labor pains come upon a pregnant woman,
Then at that time the dramatic turnaround will come to shock them, and they will be terrified completely.
and they will not escape.
The result is their utter doom and destination into wrath.
But you b are not in darkness, brothers, for that day to surprise you like a thief.
However , you all Thessalonians are not like them, my beloved brothers, where you, like the world, will be shocked by his return.
For you are all c children 1 of light, children of the day.
Let me explain once more : you are all members of the kingdom of light and glory, and you are children of the heavenly Father!!
We are not of the night or of the darkness.
In other words , we do not live like or belong to the world whatsoever.
So then d let us not sleep,
So, here is what I command to you : do not be spiritually asleep or lethargic
as others do,
as the rest of the world is.
but let us e keep awake and f be sober.
Instead, let us be fully alert, fully ready to do God's will, always loving the brothers and ready to share the message of grace with others.
For those who sleep, sleep at night,
To repeat again : the world in its self-complacency is in utter darkness.
and those who get drunk, g are drunk at night.
Yes , their acts that go against God are all darkness.
But since we belong to the day,
But because we are in the kingdom of God,
let us be sober,
therefore , let us always keep alive to the LORD, thinking always about him.
h having put on the breastplate of i faith and love,
We can do this by having the protection of our salvation of faith and the love Jesus gave to us on his cross always in our hearts and minds,
and for a helmet the hope of salvation.
as well as always meditating on the glorious eternal future that is to come
For God has not destined us for j wrath,
God is the ground of this glorious future, which is the opposite of hell.
but k to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ,
Yes , this salvation in full (including our bodies) in Christ will be awesome,
l who died for us
Christ who gave everything for us.
so that whether we are awake or asleep
The result of his death for us is that whether we are on this earth, or are in heaven
we might live with him.
that in any case, we are always living for Jesus' glory.
Therefore encourage one another
So, my brothers, encourage each other with these words
and build one another up,
doing so in love and to help others with your own words,
just as you are doing.
as you are doing right now.

Key Observations and Questions In verse 3, when people say that there is peace and security, how different will there mentality be to that of today? Verse 4: a true Christian will not be surprised by His return. But perhaps this is not "spiritually" surprised, as we all will be surprised in terms of exact dates and times What does Paul mean by "keep awake and not be asleep" on specific terms? I assume it is about living in holiness and love, if we go back to Chapter 4 Notice the armor pieces: breastplate and helmet, listed also in Ephesians 6. However, there is a slight variant on the breastplate meaning. There, the breastplate is of righteousness. Perhaps here, we are to take such a breastplate by faith (ie believe in the salvation by faith) Takeaways Commands Verse 6: Let us always keep spiritually awake, ready to do His will and commands Means Verse 8: we can keep awake by trusting in his word which he gives us, and by being zealous to love our brothers and sisters in the church Motivations Jesus, the one who died for us, grounds our radically new lifestyle which is different from the world Anchors We have been called into the light, as children of the Father of lights! The hope of a great eternal future spurs us on to his will. Further Bible study I plan to continue working on my study of Colossians and Ephesians in Greek. But I will use arcing, phrasing, but then do a paraphrase of my arc when done to really dig in more into the meaning of the texts.

Romans 13:11-14
11 Besides this you know the time, that the hour has come for you b to wake from sleep. c For salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed. 12 d The night is far gone; the day is at hand. So then let us e cast off f the works of darkness and g put on the armor of light. 13 h Let us walk properly as in the daytime, i not in orgies and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and sensuality, j not in quarreling and jealousy. 14 But k put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, l to gratify its desires.
Look at Romans 13:11-14, which is a wonderful parallel passage. It says everywhere that we are Children of Light, and so we can now live in a radically different way from the world, as shining witnesses of Christ.

Excellent! Let me know if you have any other questions about any of this, like you emailed me recently (or was it through a project that you asked ma about your steps?). I was encouraged to see the details of your study.

Verse 8: we can keep awake by trusting in his word which he gives us, and by being zealous to love our brothers and sisters in the church
I agree that verse 8 provides means, but trusting in his Word and being zealous in love isn't described in verse 8. Rather, the breastplate and helmet are the means.

Your paraphrase is excellent throughout: you're unpacking the Scripture well, being creative while still being faithful to the logic.

that in any case, we are always living for Jesus' glory.
Living "with him" isn't living for his glory, I would say, but rather living alongside Jesus. Jesus died that we might enjoy his presence, whether in this life or in the life to come.

To repeat again: the world in its self-complacency is in utter darkness.
You've interpreted 7a-b in your paraphrase, but I don't think that's what Paul is saying: he is using an illustration, that people who sleep and get drunk do so at night. But since the Thessalonians are daytime people, they should be sober and wide awake!

Let me explain once more: you are all members of the kingdom of light and glory, and you are children of the heavenly Father!!
I suggest that the language of Ground be used here, rather than Explanation, since Paul is supporting his statement that they aren't in darkness (4), because they are children of light (5a).
