Text : 1 Peter 1:17-21 Title : Fear as Worship in Light of the Cross Theme : Two more reasons are given for our obedience: the final judgment, and the price of our redemption. Kernel : Besides the coming of Christ and holy character of God, two more reasons are given to motivate the believer to holy living: the final judgment of God on their lives, and the high price of their redemption. Introduction : Fear of the future… does it control you? Think about how advertisements capture your attention. We were at my in-laws house, watching some black-and-white movie late into the night, and it was the time of the evening where all the advertisements fall into one of three categories: 1) pharmaceutical, 2) paid advertisements, 3) advertisements for the TV channel. And you know what I noticed? Every single ad for drugs grabbed onto the fear of what might happen in the future. But you know what was truly fearful? All the side-effects… you know, “this may cause dizziness, cramps, loss-of-vision, burst blood vessels, random combustion, dismemberment, etc.” Even though they were playing on a fear that may or may not take place in the future, the drug actually had the potential to inspire more fear itself! We Americans, we know, seem to have an aversion to fear. “There is nothing to fear but fear itself,” Franklin Delano Roosevelt once said. But is this true? Are we just set up to be spiritual, emotional, physical powerhouses in a world that’s outside our control? Or is there something to fear? Someone to fear? Now, we must remind ourselves from earlier in the chapter: the future for the Christian is one of assured hope, but it’s also one that we should live in the reality of that day when we will see our Lord, and He will give us our inheritance and reward. If our finite lives are going to intersect with the only infinite life in the universe, then our souls should quake at that reality. Fear of God should be the only fear that drives us, not a fear of eternal judgment that 1 John 4 tells us is alien to our faith. But a holy, reverential fear that Proverbs tells us is the beginning of wisdom. I. Because the Father is going to finally judge us, we should live holy lives a. The nature of the inquisition: God will judge without partiality b. The response: a reverential, fearful living II. Because Christ was our redemption, we should live holy lives a. Christ’s sacrifice provides ground for holy living thorough realization of the price b. The foreknowledge of Christ provides ground for holy living through confidence in God’s plan c. Christ’s resurrection provides ground for holy living through future hope in God Conclusion : What do you fear? What impresses you? Are you fearful and impressed by God? Do you value His sacrifice for you? You might even wonder how you can know that you value the sacrifice. The answer is simple: you can that someone values the sacrifice based on how they live their life. You can tell that someone walks in fear of only God by how they live their lives. Would others in your life say that you value the sacrifice? Would they say you fear God alone? We should live holy lives in light of the final judgment and the sacrifice of Christ. Remember to use Leviticus 19 LXX as a benchmark for exegesis.
