Text : 1 Peter 1:10-12 Title : The Mystery We Possess Theme : The supremacy of our salvation over every other wonder. Kernel : This three-fold salvation is so amazing that the prophets longed to understand, but were ultimately not able to unveil its mysteries, besides knowing that Christ and His salvation were not for their time, but for ours. Also, angels are stumped by this salvation; they long to understand it, but even they, who dwell in God’s presence, can’t fully understand. Introduction : ever been intrigued by a mystery? I’m not talking about the whodunit kind of mystery that’s so popular on TV and in the media… but a real, bonified mystery. Something larger than life. For me, growing up one of the greatest mysteries years and years ago was outer space. I remember sitting in the back yard of our house in Monroe, OH. We had just gotten back from eating LaRosa’s pizza, and as I stared at the stars, I wondered is there anyone else out there? That’s a mystery that is appealing to many these days. Or, to take a cue from the entertainment world: imagine that you found the Ark of the Covenant, just like Indiana Jones did. What would that be like? Would you totally freak out? Would you long to look into it, or be afraid of what would happen if you did? The Bible tells us that beyond all mysteries, beyond all inquiries, beyond and theories… there is one mystery that even supernatural beings are unable to fully fathom. That we are unable to fully fathom. I. The Inquiry of the Prophets should cause a sense of humble privilege that Christ has been revealed to us and given for us a. Prophets were unable to penetrate the mystery of Christ’s sufferings b. Prophets were unable to penetrate the mystery of Christ’s glorification c. Prophets prophesied in order to provide a clear path for our faith II. The Ignorance of the Angels should cause a sense of awesome weightiness that our salvation is a mystery even in heaven a. Angels ability to discern is surely better than our own b. Angels cannot understand the three-fold salvation that is our possession I. The Inquiry of the Prophets should cause a sense of humble privilege that Christ has been revealed to us and given for us Explanation: the prophets wanted to know about Christ… specifically His suffering and the following glorification. They wanted to know the next revelation of God in salvation history. No doubt they knew that the sacrificial system couldn’t hold back sins eternally. God has promised, though, through the prophets that such a time would come. Jeremiah 31:34 proves as such. We see a picture of what this looked like in Daniel 12, where Daniel and others inquire as to when the final resurrection will take place. The answer is allegorical, and then Daniel is told that the answer is sealed until the time that it’s going to take place. In Habakkak 2:1-4, Habbakak wonders how God can use an unrighteous nation (Babylon) to punish His people, God responds that He will punish the wicked when their time comes. When is that? “The vision awaits its appointed time; it hastens to the end, it will not lie. If it seems slow, wait for it; it will surely come; it will not delay.” These prophets, and the prophets that Peter refers to, wanted to know primarily when these things were going to take place. The phrase translated in the ESV “what person or what time” is literally “what thing or what time” and is really meaning “what time or what is the personality/characteristics of the time”. They weren’t worried about who, as in trying to find an individual… they wanted to know what would be the signs leading up to Christ’s arrival, or when the actual time would be. We see shreds of this now, where people make predictions about Christ’s second coming, or probe through the Scriptures to figure when He’s coming again. But what they miss is that the great moment of our salvation is what we’re supposed to be looking towards. When we say that the prophets looked forward to the Cross and we say that we look back on the Cross… that means more than just a suggestion! What they looked forward to with great expectation we should look backwards to with great satisfaction… because Peter’s point is how amazing our salvation is! a. Prophets were unable to penetrate the mysteries of Christ’s suffering Can you imagine what it was like to suffer in the OT? How different it was from suffering in the NT? Think about it… when Job was in the midst of suffering, did he look up to heaven and say “I know you know what it’s like, God.” No, the farthest he could go was Job 19:25… He knew that His redeemer lives, and elsewhere he said that he would see him in his flesh. This isn’t a declaration that God would come to earth as a man, but instead that Job would someday, with his fleshly eyes see God. Did He know that God would become man? No. Just in God becoming a man there was suffering… God came down and dwelt with man, perfect holiness with filthy sinfulness. But the depths of His suffering were much deeper. As someone has said, many men endured the pain of the Cross, but no one endured it like Christ. For the first time in eternity, God was alone. Alone… so you would never be alone. b. Prophets were unable to penetrate the mysteries of Christ’s glorification But they also couldn’t see the full glory of God that was to be found in the face of Christ. Yahweh was the personal name for Israel, but He did not walk among them. I mean, He was among them in the glory found in the tabernacle and in the temple, but now it’s much deeper. Jesus said “if you have seen me, you have seen the Father.” A man, a person. We can tell what God is like by looking at Jesus! And now He’s seated at the right hand of God, interceding for us, fully glorified… and inside us , dwelling there, changing us into images of His glory to spread His glorious salvation to the world! And that’s not even the amazing part! The suffering brings us closer to Christ, and the glorification that He’s experienced is ours as well… indeed, His glory is displayed in suffering! You suffer now, and the Holy Spirit uses it draw you closer to Christ and to realize more fully that your final glorification… the completion of your salvation is coming, purchased for you by God with Himself. c. Prophets prophesied in order to provide a clear path for our faith But the point is not just that they were searching out Christ’s sufferings and glories, they were searching them out for us. Illustration: Peter is grounding our salvation historically. Imagine with me… you’re part of a new system of belief. There’s dozen, if not hundreds of new religions in the Roman Empire at this time. Some are being snuffed out by persecution… others are slowly making their way into the mainstream. Now a religion appears that’s totally bucking the trend. Monotheism?! So Peter wants his readers to know that this isn’t just some new thing… it’s older than even the Roman Empire. Peter is showing that followers of Christ are followers of Yahweh. The Christian religion is not new… it’s old. This is the clear path of our faith… not through principles, not through rules, not through mere obedience, but through lives filled with passion for Christ revealed in the Scriptures from the times of old up until Peter’s letter! All of His suffering and glorification was for our benefit… this is what the prophets longed to see. When was this going to happen… would they experience it? And all that was shown them was that they were serving another generation. The Spirit of Christ that now indwells Christians was working through the prophets to serve us before we were even born. Application: God is amazingly for you… for you even before you were born and had anything to say about it. So, why is it then that we feel so marginalized by society, by our own doubts? Before the dawning of America, God was working through men to provide your Declaration of Independence. Tell that to the next atheist or agnostic you talk to. There is nothing about Christianity that is self-defeating; from the beginning until now, we have been supplied with arms to fight this war with humble confidence. God could have simply come in man and saved just the Jews, and we would be outside the promises of the covenant. But we are near to them, according to Galatians 2. God has brought you near to His promises. Interaction with Unbelievers: So when you’re told that there is no point in following a deity long proved to be dead, take your comfort in this: Christ was revealed thousands of years ago to those who preceded you in the faith, but He was given to you now through the preaching of the Gospel. This is not a new spin on an old religious idea: Jesus Christ dead and raised is so otherworldly that it could only come from heaven. Bible Reading: Beyond this, do you take your Bible as its meant to be taken: as a guide to knowing God in the face of Jesus Christ? This book is amazingly, wonderfully, absolutely Christocentric. When you read Proverbs and the Psalms, do you see Christ? I’m not talking about spiritualizing the Scriptures, but seeing that all of the Bible points towards God in Christ. This is so amazing; the Bible carries the most precious knowledge in the universe. The knowledge of our salvation is so wonderful that, so otherworldly that even the angels can’t fully understand this. II. The Ignorance of the Angels should cause a sense of awesome weightiness that our salvation is a mystery even in heaven But look what it says here: the angels long to look into it. The word for “long” is more than the ESV lets on… this is translated elsewhere as desire, lust, covet. It’s the general word for a longing, but probably conveys this more intense idea. They “longed to look”… the word for look here is translated “stoop” three times at the end of Luke and John to describe what the disciples had to do to look into Jesus’ tomb. What’s the difference between the prophets inquiry and the angels desire to stoop and look into our salvation? There appears to be two things at work here: 1) the declaration that the angels stoop to look into these things means that they observe them from above, from a position of superior observation, and 2) that somehow they have a short-circuit, because they long to look into it without actually doing so. We’ll examine both of these. a. Angels ability to discern is surely better than our own The word “stoop” indicates that the angels must bend down in order to even begin to probe our complete salvation. Their powers of perception likely being greater than ours, this means that what takes place in our lives when the Holy Spirit enters in is still a mystery to them. We’re told that they rejoice when one sinner repents, so we know that they can see the outcome. It’s not like someone believes and repents and they go “say what?” They know what takes place. But their powers of perception fall short when it comes to the how. b. Angels cannot fully understand the wonder of the Gospel They “long” to look into means that there’s an unfulfilled desire that they have to know about the wisdom of God given in salvation. There’s a short circuit there. Why? Just brainstorming here: they can’t understand because they haven’t experienced grace like we have. Do you realize that? God never saved any angels; His angels have always been perfect and in His presence. Compare to us: fallen, damned people who have been redeemed by the blood of the Lamb. There is a measure in which they just can’t comprehend. But at the same time, they’re also progressively learning about salvation. Look at Ephesians 3:8-10. God is displaying His wisdom to “powers and principalities”… through the Church and the mystery of Christ’s arrival and sacrifice, God is using the church to confront demonic powers with His wisdom, and (I think) to teach the angelic hosts as well in this passage. … God gets glory by the wisdom that is manifested in the church because the demons see how stupid they ever were to disbelieve God and turn their backs on him. And he's glorified in reverse. That God is glorified by the wisdom manifest in the church. Listen, the angels can see the power of God in creation. The angels can see the wrath of God at Mt. Sinai. The angels can see the love of God at Calvary, but God says they're going to see my wisdom in the church. That God could take diverse male, female, bond, free, Jew, Greek and he could melt down all the walls and blend them together in an indivisible oneness all one with himself. One with the father, one with the Son, one with the Spirit, one with every other believer that God could do that kind of miracle of salvation is a wonder beyond wonders of wisdom and causes the angelic host to give him glory. - John Macarthur, Sermon on Ephesians 3:7-13 For demons, God is displaying His glory to them through the church. For God’s angels, He’s displaying His glory to them so that their understanding might be complete. We are teaching angels to glorify God by showing the grace that He displays in our salvation. We have been given a privilege of Cosmic Importance in the Gospel of our salvation. We get to know God… and in a sense, I think, we can and will know God better than any angel ever will, because we can receive grace… and we find out about this through the preaching of the Gospel. Listening to Sermons: What does it say? “The things that have been announced to you through the preaching of the Gospel.” This external preaching is a gift because it does not come from my lips primarily... this is preached “by the Holy Spirit.” It’s source is the Holy Spirit, putting down these inspired words to help you realize your privilege and using me to properly interpret it. And then, the Holy Spirit helps you to receive the message with understanding, discern whether my words reflect the proper interpretation of the text, and then apply it to your life in ways I don’t know anything about. What is taking place right now, the proclamation of the gospel to saved people about the suffering and glorification of Christ, is the longing of the prophets and your gift today. Conclusion : When you’re let in on a secret, do you get a small sense of privilege? How about when you’re let in on a secret that results in a pleasant surprise for you? When I was younger, Christmas time was always the time for snooping and shaking the boxes and doing all kinds of other things to try to figure out what our presents were. We were, as most children likely are, discouraged from investigating too thoroughly. The consequence if we did ultimately discover our present was too great to bear: they’d take it back. But God isn’t like that. At all. He wants you to delve into the depths of His Word to discover the nature of your salvation. It’s not like the prophets, who’s place in time prevented them from understanding this fully. And it’s not like the angels, who for some reason cannot comprehend what we’ve been given. No, we’ve been given a salvation full and free, one that He intends us to unwrap. And this is what we’ll be doing as we continue through 1 Peter… continuing to unpack our salvation, and in that see Who God really is.
