1. Was the mystery revealed in the OT in any way? How is this nuanced? The question hinges upon the "as"... is this meant to compare and restrict the phrase in 5b? Or meant to show that the two phrases are opposite, and thus none of this mystery was revealed in the OT? Certainly there are parts of the OT that point towards Gentiles being redeemed. (Isaiah 19:25, Micah 4:1-5) But the revelation isn't of their redemtion, but their nearness to the covenant people of God. It's not as though they become a covenant people of God. They become (part of) the covenant people of God. This wasn't revealed in the OT that I'm aware of. "In what sense, then, could it be said that this mystery was a new revelation if the prophets of the Old Testament had already looked forward to the saving purpose of God in which Gentiles along with Israelites would be embraced within its scope? The manner in which that purpose would come to fruition by incorporation of both Jews and Gentiles into the body of Christ was not made known. This had remained a mystery until the time of its fulfilment, and Paul, as the apostle to the Gentiles and first steward of this mystery, has the privilege of unfolding its wonder to his readers." (1) 2. How does verse 13 relate to what comes prior? Is it dependant upon verse 2 (if-then) or an inference of the entire text somehow? Hoehner's idea that the "if" of verse 2 meets its apodasis in verse 13 seems to have merit. If you've read, if you've perceived the grace given to Paul for your sake, then do no faint at his sufferings. Or, it could be an inference from verse 1... Paul is imprisoned for the sake of the Gentiles, therefore don't lose heart. The suffering is for them. Either makes some measure of sense. I need to do a search on protasis and apodasis. 3. Who are the apostles and prophets? Are they strictly in the NT? Given the references in 2:20 and 4:11, I'm not super-inclined to see these as related to the Old Testament in any way. 2 Peter 3 has them together in a disjuncted way. 1 Corinthians has them twice as "gifts" to the NT church. Not sure how to take the Luke 11 passage... it could mean latter prophets in the NT, but probably not given the explicit reference to Adam and Zachariah. If the adjective "holy" can be shown to connect to both "apostles" and "prophets" I'd be inclined to think that only the NT is in view. The "now" seems to govern this, and if some disjunction between the two words can't be shown (either in the article or the adjective), then they should be from the same time frame.
