In the last days, there will be difficult times because people will have the external signs of godliness yet lack the transformed desires of a new heart. Such people will cause damage to the body of Christ and need to be avoided.
Notes
The list of adjectives given for these people is bookended by love. It begins with lovers of self and lovers of money and ends with lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God. And even after that list of 18 traits, they are still identified as people that have the appearance of godliness. How can that list describe someone that appears godly? If that list describes attitudes of the heart. Man looks at the outward appearance but God looks at the heart. Have you experienced the transforming work of the Holy Spirit? Have you experienced a change in your desires so that you now thirst after righteousness? So that your soul now pants for God as if for water in a dry and weary place? The power of godliness is in a transformed life. Those that claim to be Christian and yet do not exhibit the life-changing fruit of the Holy Spirit damage the testimony of Christ in the community and need to be avoided.
