John 17:1-5
When Jesus had spoken these words, ~ to disc
Ταῦτα ἐλάλησεν Ἰησοῦς
m he lifted up his eyes to heaven , and said ,
καὶ ἐπάρας τοὺς ὀφθαλμοὺς αὐτοῦ εἰς τὸν οὐρανὸν εἶπεν•
“ Father , n the hour has come; ~ cross
πάτερ, ἐλήλυθεν ἡ ὥρα•
o glorify your Son impv1
δόξασόν σου τὸν υἱόν,
so that the Son may p glorify you,
ἵνα ὁ υἱὸς δοξάσῃ σέ,
since/ bc q you have given him authority over all flesh,
καθὼς ἔδωκας αὐτῷ ἐξουσίαν πάσης σαρκός,
r so that to give eternal life
ἵνα δέδωκας ζωὴν αἰώνιον
to all s whom you have given him.
πᾶν ὃ αὐτῷ δώσῃ αὐτοῖς.

Exegetical idea: Subject: Why should the Father Glorify the Son? 
 1. The Father should glorify the Son thru the cross (1-3) 
      so that the Son glorify the Father 
      bc Father has given authority over humanity to give eternal life to 
      those whom Father has given him 
      Eternal life is knowing the only true God and JC Son, whom Father 
2. The Father Should Glorify the Son (4-5) 
     with his former glory he had in eternity ~ previously    
     bc Jesus glorified the Father on earth by accomplishing the work the           Father gave him to do 

Homiletical Idea:   Subject:  Why should the Father Glorify the Son? 
1.   the Father Glorifies Son so Son glorifies Father (1-3) 
      Father has given Jesus authority over humanity to give eternal life                 to those Father has given him (ch 6)        
      Eternal life defined - knowing the only true God & JC Son  
2.  Father Glorifies the Son with his former glory (4-5) 
    Jesus glorified the Father thru obedient life/D/R/(E?) 
    Jesus glorified in his exaltation at the right hand of God with former glory 

Preaching Idea -  the shame of cross most clearly displays glory of God
